Good documentary, poor gallery

Guptill wrote this book about America's favorite illustrator at the height of his career, back in 1946. His career had another twenty years to go at that point, including at least 70 more of his famous Post covers. This book is a snapshot and retrospective of his work up to that time.

You won't find the usual biographic data here: parents, childhood, and the rest. Instead, this praises the illustrator who had captured the country fondness and respect by capturing its image - the image that America wanted to have of itself. Small wonder the country wanted to know more about the man who knew so much about them, or at least about their hopes and dreams.

Rockwell adopted a chatty, conversational tone with the author. He described every aspect of his working process, including the professional, conceptual, and painstaking technical steps he went through. The book is profusely illustrated with his preliminary sketches and drawings, as well as some photos of biographical interest. A few paintings appear in color, but the large majority are black and white, often of indeterminate contrast or focus. Remember the purpose of this book, though. This isn't a gallery of his work; instead, the reproductions serve to illustrate his career. Most appear in only enough detail to remind the familiar reader about the general structure of any given piece.

Decide what you want - a collection of Rockwell's idealized images, or a look at the man himself. If you want just the pictures, this might disappoint you. If you want an introduction to Rockwell as person and artist, you'll find a lot to like.

Rockwell's story

Arthur Guptill published this book in 1946 and it remains a jewel. My mother had reprints of Norman Rockwell's illustrations handing in our den when I was a child. Nothing says "home" like a work painted by Rockwell. The book is a combination of the story of Norman Rockwell's life and marvelous prints of his many works. No doubt you will enjoy the many classic illustrations much like the one on the cover.
The book includes Rockwell's - "The Four Freedoms" and "Thirty Years of Rockwell POST Covers 1916 - 1946."
There is no better gift for a parent or grandparent. It is a welcomed blast from the past.

Feudel vassel Alberic learns it is alright to fail

The story was originally written in 1965 but has been reissued in 1992 accompanied by some wonderful paintings by Leonard Baskin that are, indeed, reminiscent of Barry Moser (both of whom, interestingly enough, founded their own private presses). In this day and age, children are basically taught that success is everything and the only thing. This book tells a remarkably different tale: it is alright to fail, as Alberic learns repeatedly. Alberic does not wallow in his failure, he picks up and moves on to new chapters of his life. Ultimately, he learns he is a success by being thought wise, yet he remains uncomfortable in the trappings of success. Why, because he has learned that life is lived best by continual striving, that it is a process, a journey
wherein "the freedom and the joy [is felt by] not knowing where each new step would take him."

An altogether wonderful lesson for children and wonderful paintings.

Top Notch Fantasy

The first three books of the Wheel of Time saga are exceptional modern fantasy. There is a lot of originality, lots of action, and a powerful sense of both doom and mystery.

If you're looking at buying these books, you've undoubtedly come across the criticism of the series length and the quality of the later books. And its true, the series does falter rather badly beginning around book 6 or 7, and there is a steady deterioration from there. The sense of mystery and doom dissipate, the action and plot advancement cease and the characters all devolve into indistinguishable buffoons.

HOWEVER, the first half of the series, and in particular these first 3 books, really are great, and highly recommended. I'd say just keep reading the series until you feel you found the point where it doesn't work for you anymore, then skip to the end once Book 12 comes out.

I enjoyed this book, though slightly less than the previous two books in the series. I think the story suffered a bit from not having Rand front and center. It is hard to understand the changes in his character, I know that there is a taint on Saidin, which may explain some of his irrational behavior, but I feel like it could have been a more gradual change, and that it would be easier to understand if we got more of his pov in this book. I would have liked to have seen how Rand went from being terrified of being labeled the dragon, to being 100% on board with it, without it feeling so disjointed. I was also annoyed by the stupidity of some of the other characters. In particular, when Perrin, or Mat, or Egwene see Rand in Tear, they all write it off as a figment of their imagination, but why!?! With everything that they have experienced, why would they be surprised at anything at this point. Egwene has been told she has the gift of Dreaming, so why does she dismiss her dreams so easily? And Perrin and Co. are in Tear to look for Rand, so why is he so surprised to see him?

Aside from those few things, though, I am really enjoying the overall story. Things are really beginning to happen, we are beginning to meet more of the Forsaken, the Black Ajah is doing its thing. Everytime it seems Rand has beaten Shaitan, it turns out that is not the case. With 11 more books to go in the series, I am sure there are many more false victories to go, but I am enjoying the ride, and I can't wait to see what will happen in the true last battle, Tarmon Gai'don.

They are not a waste of time

Not a stand alone novel, make sure you read the first two novels before jumping in here. Very slow pace, but stick with the books. They are not a waste of time, instead making us explore our inner beliefs among the high fantasy setting that Jordan has masterfully crafted. We are able to see recognizable human traits reflected glaringly in each character. The character building is all important to Jordan, who makes it seem as if that is all that matters. Events do occur in this book and they are worth the slight bit of floundering in character's inner thoughts that occurs at times. Highly recommend listening to this novel in audio version at least at points. Don't be afraid to take breaks, but don't forget about them either!
