Great DBT work!

I have used Dr. Sheets' "take" on DBT skills often with my own psychotherapy patients, and found her way of explaining things so clear and down-to-earth. I don't have to worry about my patients' having college-level reading skills to understand the workbook, and believe me, with dialectical behavior therapy, that is quite an accomplishment! I highly recommend this book for your own personal journey, or for your consideration if you are a mental health professional working with people whose behaviors are truly out-of-control.

Out of Control is HUGE!

I am in the process of working through Dr. Melanie Gordon Sheets, Ph.D.'s book Out of Control, and it is working! I am overwhelmed (in a good way) by the volume of practical, common sense explanations, worksheets, suggestions, definitions and life applications that weave throughout the 421 pages. I could choose to work this book in one month or I could spend a year or more sifting through all the life changing exercises, suggestions and encouragements. The book is HUGE in its content as well as in its purpose. You won't run out of ways to heal, change and grow with Out of Control. Melanie is clearly a woman who loves people and wants to help them heal: it is evident from the first page to the last, and everywhere in between. Ok CBT-- problematic DBT teachings.

I'm an intensively trained therapist that has been doing DBT for over a decade. In efforts to stay fresh and dynamic my eyes are consistently open, willing, and eager to get fresh material to present to my groups and clients that presents DBT skills in a new light. So when someone introduced this book to my I was very excited to get home and start reading through the material. Admittedly, I'm only about half way through the book (pg 168) so this is not a full review but I don't think that I will be finishing it. though I don't think I learned anything new on DBT, at least it provided me an opportunity to practice my non-judgmnetal stance.
The author opens the book orienting the reader to the three states of mind and emphasizes that these are the cornerstone of the treatment of DBT and of the use of the book. Unfortunately, the author does not seem to fully comprehend, understand and conceptualize wise mind, reasonable mind, and emotion mind in the DBT tradition. She seems to favor the use of rational/reasonable mind over emotion mind when both are equally problematic. My interpretations of her teaching is that reasonable mind is the favored state of mind to be in while there is very little mention of wise mind. DBT teaches that there are considerable benefits and problems to both emotion and reasonable mind. As responding impulsively to emotion could obviously create problems and the characteristics of reasonable mind is being absent of emotion (ie, robot, sociopath) and the goal is to find a synthesis of both of these which is wise mind.
Additionally, as this material is said to be targetting people with problems managing difficult emotions I would like to have seen more precise language and accurate expression of emotions. For example feeling suicidal and unloved are not emotions, these are thoughts/interpretations that prompt emotions.
I also disagreed with her teaching of non-judgmental stance. DBT emphasizes that to become non judgmental we need to use the basic "What skills" of observe and describe. In the book she gives an example of non-judgmental skill of a woman who 'always' speaks her mind and shares her opinion all the time with others is 'rude'. Which, of course, is a judgmental statement.
While some may see these points as being too technical or splitting hairs, it is my belief that when such basic teachings are inaccurate it calls into question the accuracy and credibilty of the material as a whole.
In short, as with numerous other DBT books on the market I found this too to be filled with minsinformation and skills that would never be endorced or encouraged by adherent DBT providers. For those of you that are interested in DBT material please consider spending the few additional dollars and getting the real deal from Dr. Lineahan and/or publicatiosn that have been written by individuals that are reputable Linehan and BTech trainers. As for this author.... not sure if she was formally trained or self taught.
